Profession costs nothing and it will be remembered that the present administration has been an administration of profession only; the profession of republicanism, but the practice of monarchy and aristocracy; . . . the profession of affection for the Constitution, but an enmity to it so great as to have rendered it a mere nose of wax; the profession of an interest in the people’s rights, but a refusal to let the people be made acquainted with the transactions of a government emanating from themselves, in a word, the profession of honor, justice, candor, dignity and good faith, when dishonor, injustice, treachery, meanness and perfidy have given hue to our public proceedings.
To compound Bache’s muckraking dangers, he had published Paine’s incendiary attacks on George Washington, not long after the author of Common Sense had been released from prison in Paris. Paine had been tried and convicted in absentia for sedition in England for the publication of Rights of Man, whose concepts of the natural rights of all citizens became one of the most-read works of all times.
In light of the French Revolution, Paine’s call for reforms in England, and the elimination of aristocratic titles, sent a shock wave through the British government; Paine also resented what he perceived as Jay’s floundering concessions to the British. Convinced that Washington had turned his back on Paine’s desperate situation during the French Revolution’s descent into the “reign of terror,” which had nearly delivered Paine to the guillotine and had left him seriously ill, the deeply troubled patriot unleashed his rage and resentment onto the Republican pages against the one symbol of national unity:
